Stonehaven to Forfar

 Sunday 8th September. Day 22.

The day started overcast again but I hoped the sun would break through as it had done yesterday.

Today we would take the coastal route from Stonehaven to Arbroath. Then on to our site at Forfar.

It was still misty as we set off.

So much wheat and barley around here, no doubt needed by all the whisky distilleries.

We could see Stonehaven in the distance.

We crossed the river called Cowie Water.

We passed Stonehaven Clock Tower, erected in 1790. As well as being a well known landmark in the town it is also used as part of the world famous (apparently!) Hogmanay Stonehaven fireballs festival! Who knew!

After driving around for a while we managed to find a car park we could fit in near the beach. We all set off for a stroll.

We could see the impressive Stonehaven war memorial on the cliff top.

It was still overcast which was a shame as everything looked dull and grey. It was quite warm though and dry!

The cliffs were quite dramatic at the end of the bay.

We had a mooch around the town.
A development opportunity as the estate agent would say! 🤣

With my ex post office clerk head on I couldn’t walk past without photographing this!

The market building clock tower completed in 1856. They like their clock towers in Stonehaven!

There was a car boot sale in the market place. Amazingly I didn’t buy anything!!

The floral displays were so beautiful here.

We walked back along the beach promenade.

Our next stop was Dunnottar Castle. Although a ruin it was still really impressive on the cliff top. We couldn’t park though as it was rammed so John waited with the van whilst I took a quick photo or 2!

Moving on to Gourdon we could see Todhead lighthouse in the distance.

We drove through Gourdon and headed for the harbour.

John had read about this award winning fish and chip restaurant in Gourdon so we were delighted to find it open, dog friendly and they said we could park outside!

We went upstairs to the restaurant which was lovely.

They were really friendly and brought a bowl of water for Dex. He had some of my chips of course!

I had smoked haddock done in garlic butter it was delicious 😋

John had small haddock in batter with scampi.

He also had a deep fried haggis! He said it was delicious, I’ll take his word for it 🤣
They made their own sticky toffee pudding and homemade lemon posset but unfortunately we were too stuffed.

We set off again heading towards Montrose.

We could see the North Water Viaduct spanning the river North Esk.

We drove through Montrose town.

Onwards again to Arbroath which is famous for Arbroath smokies, hot smoked haddock.

The South Esk Viaduct.

We could see Arbroath Abbey ruins so stopped to have a closer look.

We set off to our campsite near Forfar after a quick stop at Tesco.

I took Dex for a walk as there was a footpath leading from the campsite. Unfortunately he managed to catch a bird! It was by accident really he was sniffing in a bush and the poor bird happened to be hiding there. I think it was a partridge. Anyway I managed to rescue it and it flew away so hopefully no damage. Of course Dex was very pleased with himself and spent the rest of the walk hunting for more birds (which happily he didn’t find!)
