Fairy Pools & Dunvegan Castle

 Day 20 Sunday 5th May

I walked Dex in the morning and we had those ever changing mountain views. These are the Cuillin Hills. They certainly feel like mountains to me!

Cuillin Hills

Soon we were off on our travels although we did have to wait for some sheep to cross the road 😆

We were off to see the fairy pools this morning which was only about 12 miles away. It turned out to be a very long 12 miles as some of the roads are really bad here and take pot holes to a whole new level! Also a lot of single track roads with passing places. The scenery dramatic as ever.

We arrived at the fairy pools car park which was already full of motorhomes but a lovely lady who was policing the parking found us a space. It was soon clear that John would have to stay behind as it was a 45 minute walk just to get to the top. John can’t walk far at the moment because of his back and hip issues, he thinks it might be bursitis. He’s gradually improving but it will take time. So Dex, Brucie and I set off without him. You can see the winding path we had to take up the hillside.

It was really beautiful here and well worth a visit. So many waterfalls and clear pools which had different colours of blue green and turquoise depending on the rock below. Dex enjoyed paddling in the shallows.

Brucie enjoyed it all too from the safety of my rucksack 😀

The views were fabulous all around. There were a lot of people here and Dex made some new friends. So many nationalities too it was fascinating hearing all the chatter in so many different languages as we all walked along the winding path.

We set off again heading for Dunvegan Castle. More fabulous views on the way!

We could see Idrigill point far beyond in the mist.

We passed an old Broch called Dun Beag broch. It’s the remains of an old tower or broch as they were called.

Onwards to Dunvegan.

We soon arrived at the Castle. The weather had turned and it was quite cold. John decided to stay in the van as we could see it would be too far for him to walk. Dex stayed with him for company plus he wasn’t allowed inside the castle anyway. I set off with Brucie.

There were lots of different gardens including water gardens with 2 impressive waterfalls.

The floating pebble

The tulips were so beautiful 😍

The biggest monkey puzzle tree I’ve ever seen!

The Rhododendron garden. Unfortunately most were still in bud.

After Dunvegan we headed back to the campsite.
Lots of old crofters cottages on the way.

I couldn’t believe this recycling area right on the hillside, that’s got to be the most remote! 😆

Just after this John spotted a bird of prey on a post. I just managed to get a few quick shots from the cab before it flew away. We really hoped it was a Golden Eagle as we’ve always wanted to see one. There are quite a few here on Skye so it’s was a possibility. Unfortunately it turned out (after consulting our bird expert friend Dennis) to be a buzzard but we will keep looking!

More great views on the way back to the campsite.

Dex and I went for a nice walk back to Slogachan bridge.
