Road trip to Skye part 2
Day 18 Friday May 3rd
We woke up to glorious unbroken sunshine which was perfect for our trip to Skye! I walked Dex in the woods by the river in the morning and we were lucky enough to spot a deer!
We set off to Fort Augustus. More fabulous Mountain View’s on the way.
We noticed a viewpoint and pulled over. It was actually a monument to the commandos who had trained here and had died in the second world war.
The views here were panoramic and stunning 😍
There was even a piper!
We carried on towards Fort Augustus. Past Loch Lochy (they must have really run out of ideas when naming that one!🤣)
Then past Loch Oich.
We crossed the Bridge of Oich and could see the Caledonian canal.
Finally into Fort Augustus. Over the canal we could see the locks. There is a large swing bridge to allow vessels to enter the locks from Loch Ness.
We found a large carpark and parked up. Plenty of space for Motorhomes. One of many many gift shops!
You can see the remains of an old bridge.
Our first glimpse of Loch Ness which we will be visiting later on when we travel back down the East Coast. We found a great spot for lunch right beside the lock.
Brucie enjoyed watching the boats!
John had ordered a haggis scotch egg. I ordered hot smoked salmon with dill crème fresh, red onion and capers on a crumpet. Was absolutely delicious but I had eaten most of it before remembering I was going to take a picture so you’ll just have to imagine it! 🤣 We had Scottish tablet ice cream afterwards which is caramel and fudge, amazing 😋
Dex also had a treat 😁
The typical range of goods available in the gift shops. Plus everything and anything tartan of course!
We said au revoir to Loch Ness as we set off again towards Skye. Following the banks of Loch Cluanie.
Then past Loch Duich and Loch Alsh towards the Kyle of Lochalsh.
The scenery was stunning especially on such a glorious day.
The Glen Shiel pass with mountains all around was spectacular although John wasn’t so keen on the roads with the drops looking downwards.
We passed the Kintail Lodge hotel at Shiel Bridge
Then we came across Eilean Donan Castle which looked spectacular against the water.
We decided to stop and have a coffee break here.
I liked the sound of the Clootie McTootie Roll 🤣
Will have to try one sometime.
Over the bridge at Loch Long
Our first sighting of the Skye Bridge in the distance. It was opened in 1995 and is 1.5 miles long.
We came into the Kyle of Lochalsh.
Then over the bridge to Skye!
We couldn’t believe how beautiful it all was.
John is still suffering with his back and hip so he was glad to be getting near the end of our journey.
Past a fabulous waterfall
Dex was really relieved to settle again
We met a lovely couple who were parked next door and spent a nice evening chatting with them and drinking wine whilst basking in the sunshine. It was 22 degrees here! We really have been so lucky with the weather so far….
