Stornoway & Port Ness

 Day 25 Friday 10th May

After yesterday’s rain this morning was much improved and turned out to be a lovely day! I wasn’t feeling too good have come down with some sort of cold and cough lurgy but am taking cold cure and cough syrup and determined to carry on! John still not great but he’s also determined. So we set off for Stornaway, the capital of Lewis. On the way we saw small lochs with an island in the middle which looked like a cairn or possibly a broch.

We could see a tower in the distance. This is the Lewis memorial tower. Memorial Tower

As we reached the outskirts of Stornoway the landscape changed completely and it was very green with lots of leafy trees and shrubs. Most of Lewis seems to be peat scrubland and hardly any trees.

John went shopping in Tesco whilst Dex and I walked along to the harbour.

There was an amazing art installation in the harbour representing a ship which was wrecked in 1919.

There was a statue of a herring girl.

We saw the CalMac ferry that we will be catching on Sunday to Ullapool.

We walked across the bridge to Lews castle. Lews Castle

After leaving Stornoway we set off for Port Ness. We passed the Stornoway Town Hall with its clock tower.

Then passed the Nicolson Institute clock tower.

This archway was part of Lews castle grounds.

We loved Port Ness with its beautiful harbour and beaches.

We stopped for an ice cream.

Dex and I went for a walk on the beach.

On the way home we stopped to look at a building. It was a reconstruction of a traditional building called a Shieling.

We could see the distant hills and headed back to camp.
