Kyle of Tongue

 Sunday 25th August Day 8

I was woken at 5am by the cockerel crowing! Luckily did manage to get back to sleep. It’s hard to believe we are so far North. We started in Wiltshire after visiting family there and now we are right at the top of the British Isles.

We will be travelling to the Orkney islands on Tuesday but for the next two days we are booked on a site at the Kyle of Tongue, further west from here.

I went to check on the animals before we set off. They have chickens, ducks, goats and pigs.

Bert and Ernie two of the 4 goats

The pig pen, home to Cruella, Snuffles & Curly Sue. They are a New Zealand breed called Kunekune. So cute all snuggled together and I loved their fluffy ears.

The ducks

The cockerel

The site was a lovely clean well run site, Christian and Vicky were very welcoming. They decided to move up here after the first lockdown and then opened the site. Way too remote for me!

Nice lounge area with kitchenette

This made me chuckle 🤣

Before we left Scarfskerry I wandered down to the jetty.

The sheep were all lying down munching grass. I decided as it was Sunday morning they were having breakfast in bed 🤣

We set off for Dennet bay so we could walk along the beach.

We saw this little family, white bull, black cow and little brown calf 🥰

We had a lovely time on the beach, sunny but cold. Couldn’t believe I was wearing a beanie hat in August but I needed it! Lots of fab shells on the beach. Dex managed to find a crab 🤮

A pair of Oyster Catchers

Jellyfish

Dex loved walking in the sand dunes.

As you can see the beaches are really crowded here 🤣

After Dunnet we set off again for Tongue

We went through the centre of Thurso.

We saw lots of walls made out of these stone slabs.

Beautiful purple heather everywhere 🥰

Look out sheep we’re coming through!

We decided to stop at the next pub or hotel we came to. They tend to have more hotels than pubs up here. We found the Farr Inn at Bettyhill. Had nice lamb tacos. I sampled the local Rock Rose gin which was from the local Dennet distillery. Very nice 😋

Off again to Tongue. Another half hours drive. Most of the roads were single track with passing places so it was taking much longer to get anywhere.

We crossed the river Naver

The mountains looked so atmospheric in the mist

Eventually we arrived at the Kyle of Tongue campsite and were pleased to have a great view over the bay.

Dex likes looking out the front window 😁

Soon after we arrived it started hammering it down so we were glad to be settled in the dry.

A while later the sun came out and we went for a walk along the shore road.

It was so beautiful looking out to the Rabbit Islands.

We saw 3 herons, many other shoreline birds possibly sandpipers and the birdsong was wonderful.

You could see oyster beds out in the bay.

We walked past the entrance to the House of Tongue  but the house itself was hidden by imposing walls and trees.

We watched the sun gradually setting on the way back to the campsite.
