Tongue

Monday 26th August Day 9

It was a beautiful start to the day. The mountains in all their splendour.

We were staying another night here so had time to go exploring. We decided to walk into Tongue village. I stayed in Tongue 30 years ago so was curious to see if it had changed. Apart from a new shop and post office which was closed for refurbishment (no sign of the old shop) no change at all! 🤣 We walked along the main road up the hill.

We could see the stables belonging to Tongue House.

There are many different groups of cars doing the NC500 route. We’ve seen quite a few along the way. Not seen these before though!

We could see the ruins of Castle Varrich in the distance.

The heather as beautiful as ever!

Looking back over the causeway.

St Andrew’s church with commonwealth war graves

This beautiful house had just been refurbished.

The Ben Loyal Hotel which was unfortunately closed until 4pm.

The police station!

We found a lovely spot at the Tongue Hotel for lunch with a view 🥰

John had a coronation chicken baguette.

I had feta with roasted vegetables

In the distance you can see all the Motorhomes crossing the causeway. The NC500 has become a really popular bucket list event now and to be honest it must be driving the locals mad. I know they make money from the tourism but it wasn’t until we started walking around that we realised the numbers of Motorhomes coming through these villages. No wonder the roads are full of potholes! I guess people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones 🤣 We are deliberately not following the NC500 route, we are just enjoying Scotland in our own time and pace.

Beautiful silver birch woods

The Rowan trees are plentiful this year

The chickens were all hiding in the coop

Back to the van for tea and cakes. The cakes courtesy of the cafe on site. Carrot for John and caramel biscoff for me 😋
Soon after we had a midge attack! We have come prepared however so quickly sprayed ourselves with various repellents and I rushed to the shop to get a citronella candle. You can’t believe something that small can cause such a bite! The first time we have encountered them in Scotland so we can’t really complain!

They didn’t stop the kids enjoying themselves splashing in the puddles 🥰

Dex and I went for an evening stroll and managed to avoid most of the little critters (the midges I mean 🤣)
