Aberdeen & Drum Castle

 Saturday 7th September. Day 21

So after an afternoon of glorious sunshine it turned out very misty this morning, you could hardly see anything! John and I headed to the beach with Dex.

It was very atmospheric in the mist.

It was fascinating seeing all the different bird footprints in the sand.

As we walked along the sun was gradually burning through the clouds and everything started coming into view.

Dex hates waves but was happy to have a dip in this calm water.

Peterhead is one of the busiest fishing ports in Europe.

We set off around the coast towards Aberdeen. We could see a ruined castle on the cliff side.

We could also see what looked like a cairn or remains of a Broch. I think it was the remains of Boddam castle.

We crossed the river Dee.

It was really misty again as we entered the city.

We drove past the river.

We could see Wellington suspension bridge.

We decided to head out of the city and go and look at Drum Castle about 10 miles away. We could get in for free with our National Trust membership cards. Dex was allowed in the gardens (apart from the walled garden).

The chapel

The old tower. This is the original part of the castle and dates from 1323.

The cattle were taking shade under the trees.

As Dex wasn’t allowed in the walled garden, John and I took turns to have a look around.

The garden was beautiful with so much colour and fragrance. Lots of tranquil spaces to sit and reflect. It had a wonderful peaceful feel. I honestly could have sat there for hours.

I really loved these pink and cream roses which I’d never seen before. They had no fragrance but were exquisite.

After the gardens we made our way to the cafe for honeycomb ice creams before heading to our new campsite. I also bought some very nice sausage rolls to have for dinner.

We crossed the river Dee once again.

We arrived at Deeside Holiday Park. After setting up, we sat outside enjoying G & T’s in the sunshine.

There were hundreds of rabbits on the site so Dex was on rabbit watch!

We hadn’t travelled far today but it was still quite a long day. This sightseeing lark is exhausting 🤣
