Coastal route to Budle Bay

 Tuesday 17th September. Day 31.

Another sunny day! We set off for our coastal trip.

First we took a quick look at Newbattle Abbey. It is now a college but really impressive.

We carried on towards Dunbar.

A cloud factory 🤣

They must have been expecting us as the flags were out!

This beautiful old building is called the Dunbar Townhouse.

This statue is of the Creel Loaders. It honours the women who used to carry loads of creel on their backs from the harbour.

In the harbour we could see the ruins of Dunbar Castle.

This memorial stone honours those who fought and died at the battle of Dunbar in 1650.

We set off again on the coastal route.

Next we passed through Eyemouth.

We kept following the coast.

Past Lamberton Skerrs.

We passed over the border into England. Our Scottish adventure was sadly over! We still had some exploring to do on our way back home however!

Next stop was Berwick on Tweed.

We managed to find free parking outside the walls of the town.

We set off to explore.

Not sure what this used to be!!

Definitely not getting the Motorhome through there!

This is one of the oldest pubs and was frequented by the military.

We found a butchers selling Scotch pies. Dex was hoping to share 🤣

The Bell Tower built in 1577 as a lookout and warning post.

We crossed the new bridge and could see the old bridge that was being repaired.

I got a passing glimpse of the Royal Border bridge.

After this we set off towards Holy Island. We knew the tide was in so we couldn’t cross over on the causeway. We wanted to get a closer look.

We had no idea that the road would just disappear into the sea, we expected a car park area or at least somewhere to turn around but there was nothing! Apart from an ice cream van! 🤣 It was a bit of a nightmare actually as we couldn’t wait for 3 hours for the tide to go out. John walked down and decided he could just manage to turn around after the ice cream van. It was a bit of a squeeze but he managed it.

We had thought of going over to Holy Island the next day to see Lindisfarne castle. However after reading about how quickly the tide can change and how people get stuck we decided not to bother.

It would be just our luck to get stranded!

I took some photos from the mainland.

We continued on to Budle Bay where we had booked a campsite for 2 nights.

It turned out to be a nightmare campsite. Very expensive but I booked it as all the others in the area were full. It was honestly awful, so dirty and run down, clearly not been maintained or refurbished for years and quite obviously neglected. Also no WiFi which is why I’m so behind now with my blog! The only plus point was it was quiet! We made the best of it and John cooked chilli and rice and we settled in for the evening.
