John O Groats to Wick

 Sunday 1st September. Day 15

We woke to a beautiful day! The campsite wasn’t the best, the facilities quite tired and grotty so we decided to move on. First though we took Dex for a walk along the coastal path.

We could see the Pentland Firth, one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the World.

We could see the John O Groats house in the distance.

The sand was made of pure white shells

We left Dex in the van and set off to the end of land signpost to take photos.

We had to have the obligatory photo under the signpost of course! Years ago I went on a school trip to Lands End. I always wanted to make it to the other end of the British Isles and now I have! 😍

Back on the road again and taking the coastal road to Wick. Only a short journey today.

We passed Bucholie Castle.

Then we passed Old Keiss Castle. There was a ruined castle on the shore and nearby a newer castle.

Soon after we passed through Keiss village.

We could see Noss Head Lighthouse in the distance.

Another castle on the horizon. This is Ackergill Tower. It’s privately owned and is now a wedding and events venue.

There are hundreds of Castles in Scotland, in fact around 1500! Caithness has 31 of these. I was looking forward to visiting some of them.

Soon after we arrived at Wick. We filled up at Tesco and bought milk then headed into town.

We drove down to the harbour and had a look around. It was Sunday and there was no one around.

We found a good spot to stop for lunch. Nothing open so we made lunch in the van.

We watched a young gull as he pottered around exploring. We could hear him on the roof of the van at one point!

I saw a seal pop its head up in the water. Then it disappeared. It appeared again and a lot of seagulls started dive bombing it! I didn’t manage to catch this on camera but it was amazing to see. I guess they were warning him not to take all the fish!

After lunch we headed off to the Wick river campsite just outside the town.

It was a beautiful location by the river and close enough to walk into town. We decided to stay two nights.

The facilities here are fabulous, so clean and modern with underfloor heating. Very luxurious especially after the last place!

I don’t normally photograph the facilities but these are worth a mention!

Great laundry room too and I got our washing sorted.

They even had a secure phone charging facility.

We took Dex for a walk by the river. So many birds here.

Back to camp for showers and then John cooked burgers with mash and beans with corn on the cob to start. We know how to roll! 🤣
